Common questions

The questions we hear most often

Answered directly by Dr. Ser's team.

GLP-1 or surgery, which is better?
These aren't competing options, they're tools for different situations. GLP-1 therapy suits patients with lower BMI, fewer comorbidities, and willingness to commit to long-term medication. Surgery is better suited for patients who need more durable, significant metabolic change. Dr. Ser's approach is to find the path that genuinely fits you, not to promote a particular option.
How safe is metabolic surgery?
Modern laparoscopic metabolic surgery has a very low complication rate. In the hands of an experienced surgeon, serious complications occur in fewer than 1% of cases. Dr. Ser has performed over 4,000 procedures, with comprehensive protocols covering pre-operative assessment, surgical execution, and post-operative follow-up. Safety is always the primary consideration.
What do I eat after surgery? Can I return to a normal diet?
Post-surgery nutrition progresses through five stages: clear liquids → full liquids → pureed → soft → regular texture. Most patients can gradually return to a near-normal diet within 6–8 weeks, though portions will be significantly smaller than before. Long-term, balanced eating with adequate protein is key to maintaining results. Our dietitian team provides personalized guidance throughout.
Can metabolic surgery treat type 2 diabetes?
Yes. Metabolic surgery (particularly gastric bypass procedures) has a well-documented effect on type 2 diabetes remission. Some patients are able to reduce or stop insulin entirely after surgery. This isn't just because of weight loss, the surgery itself directly alters gut hormone secretion in ways that improve glucose regulation.
What is InBody, and why does it matter more than BMI?
A standard scale only measures total weight. InBody measures muscle mass, fat mass, visceral fat, and basal metabolic rate separately. The goal of treatment isn't just a lower number on the scale, it's reducing fat while preserving muscle. InBody shows what's actually changing inside your body, making it a far more useful clinical tool than BMI alone.
Will I regain weight after stopping GLP-1 medication?
GLP-1 medications produce meaningful weight loss while in use, but stopping without building sustainable lifestyle habits alongside them often leads to gradual weight return. This doesn't mean the medication failed, obesity is a chronic condition that requires a long-term management strategy. Dr. Ser combines medication with dietary guidance and behavioral adjustment to make every treatment choice as effective as possible.
What is ESG. Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty?
ESG is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces stomach volume by suturing the stomach wall endoscopically, no incisions, no external scars, shorter recovery. It's suitable for patients with BMI in the 27–35 range who want effective weight loss without traditional surgery. In terms of outcome, it sits between medication and metabolic surgery, and is an important option in the treatment ladder.
How long does post-surgery follow-up last?
Long-term follow-up is one of the most important factors in surgical success. Standard check-ins are at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months post-surgery, then annually. Each visit covers weight, nutritional markers, and comorbidity status. Dr. Ser's philosophy: surgery is the beginning, not the end, the follow-up care that comes after is what determines long-term outcomes.
